How to Get a WINZ Quote for a Laptop, Phone or Repair
Short answer: pick the device or repair you need, ask a supplier for a written quote, then give that quote to Work and Income with your application. At TechCrazy you can ask for a WINZ quote at any of our three Auckland stores (Manukau, Mt Wellington and Massey) or online.
What is a WINZ quote?
It's a written price from a shop for a specific item: the exact laptop, phone, tablet or repair, its price, and the supplier's details. Work and Income uses it to see what the item costs before deciding on your application. It's a price document, not an approval. Work and Income makes the decision.
Who can apply?
Work and Income can help with essential or urgent costs, often as an advance that you pay back over time. Whether you qualify depends on your situation, including your income and assets, and it's not only for people on a benefit. The best place to check is workandincome.govt.nz or MyMSD, or a chat with your case manager.
Step by step
- Work out what you actually need. A Chromebook for school, a laptop for study or work, a phone that works on NZ's 4G networks, or a cracked screen fixed. Knowing the job it has to do keeps the price sensible, and a sensible price is easier to justify.
- Get the quote. Come into a TechCrazy store, call (09) 280 3923, or use the WINZ quote page. Tell us the item and your name, and we'll write the quote in the format Work and Income asks for.
- Apply with Work and Income. Add the quote to your application through MyMSD, by phone or with your case manager. They may ask for other information too, like a bank statement.
- Pay and pick up. If you're approved, Work and Income will tell you how the payment works. Often it's a payment card, and payment cards usually have to be used within a set time. Then collect your device from the store, or we'll sort out delivery.
What can we quote for?
- Laptops and Chromebooks for school, study and work
- iPads and tablets
- Phones: brand new or tested refurbished, every one network unlocked
- Repairs: phone screens, batteries, charging ports and laptop faults (repairs from $49)
Tips that make it easier
- Refurbished stretches the budget. A graded refurbished laptop or iPhone does the same job as new for less, and ours come with a 12-month warranty (6 months on Acceptable grade).
- Repair before you replace. If the only problem is a cracked screen or a tired battery, a repair quote is often far lower than a new device. Our repairs come with a 6-month warranty.
- Quotes are for a specific item. Prices and stock change, so if your application takes a while, ask us to check the quote is still current before you go back to Work and Income.
FAQs
Do I have to buy once I have a quote?
No. A quote doesn't commit you to buying.
Which TechCrazy stores do WINZ quotes?
All three: Manukau (16 Lambie Drive, Papatoetoe), Mt Wellington (Shop 1/295 Penrose Road, next to Woolworths) and Massey (2 Triangle Road, inside Challenge).
Can I get a quote for a repair, not a new device?
Yes. Bring the device in and we'll check it and quote the repair before any work starts.
